Two Classic Regional Breakfast Dishes To Start Your Morning

The United States is rich with many regional traditions, cultural dishes, and unique foods. If you've been looking for some new and different ways to get your family's morning started, one of the best ways to do it is to make them some regional breakfast favorites from other parts of the country. Here's a look at two dishes that are true classics in their own areas but could be new to you and your family depending on where you live. You can make them at home or look for them in a local restaurant, like Steves Famous Diner.

Southern Comfort Food Breakfast

When you want to start your family off with something filling and comforting, traditional southern dishes are a great way to go. Perhaps one of the most iconic southern breakfasts is biscuits and gravy. The foundation of this dish is a soft buttermilk biscuit. The biscuit is split in half, then creamy sausage gravy is ladled over the top. To make sausage gravy, brown a quarter to a half-pound of ground sausage, depending on how much meat you want in the dish. Once it's browned, stir in a couple of tablespoons of flour, then stir it constantly over medium heat to cook out the "raw flour" taste. As the flour starts to turn golden on the meat, pour in a cup and a half of milk and a half-cup of heavy cream. Add a bay leaf, some salt and pepper, and a little bit of thyme. Stirring frequently, let it come to a simmer. Turn the heat to low and let it simmer until the sauce thickens to a gravy consistency. Remove the bay leaf before serving. You can add eggs, a slice of ham, and some fresh fruit to round out the dish.

Southwestern Breakfast Favorite

When you think of the foods in the southwest, chilaquiles are one of the top breakfast dishes that you should experience at least once. It's composed of fried tortillas that are simmered in salsa before being served over scrambled eggs and topped with queso fresco and avocado. Simply cut a few corn tortillas into six or eight pieces, then fry them lightly in some oil. Once fried, transfer them to a saucepan with the salsa of your choice. Salsa verde is popular for this as is traditional salsa. Simmer them in the salsa for about five minutes before placing them on the bed of scrambled eggs. Add some of the salsa over the top, then sprinkle them with the garnishes.
