Unexpected Pizza Topping Ideas

If you're a true pizza lover, you're most likely happy even with just a plain pie. Sometimes, however, it's fun to mix it up and give your pizza an unexpected topping combination. When you're feeling adventurous, there are countless creative ways that you can transform an ordinary pizza into a crave-worthy one.

You can either use the fun topping ideas to enhance a basic delivery pizza, or to create a one-of-a-kind gourmet pie from scratch. If you you're hosting a casual dinner party for friends or family members, consider serving several different pizzas featuring a mix of taste-tempting topping combinations. Guests will enjoy getting to sample a variety of new flavor combos.

If you're getting tired of the same old toppings, here are some new ideas that may reignite your passion for pizza:

1. Mac and Cheese Pizza

When you combine two favorite comfort foods, mac and cheese and pizza, you get a pie that will please kids and adults of all ages. If you're in a hurry, make a pre-packaged box of mac and cheese, place it on top of cooked cheese pizza, and then place it back into the oven until the top gets golden brown.

You can also top a pizza with homemade mac and cheese for a taste treat. If you want an extra-cheesy pie, sprinkle some shredded Cheddar cheese on top of the noodle mixture before baking. Sprinkle some of your favorite hot sauce over the pizza for added flavor.

2. Grilled Shrimp Alfredo Pizza

For a gourmet restaurant-worthy pizza, use a rich and creamy Alfredo sauce in place of marinara, and top with grilled shrimp and fresh mozzarella cheese. You can add grilled vegetables, such as asparagus, red peppers, tomatoes or eggplant as well.

Sprinkle basil from your garden over the cooked pie to add fresh flavor and vibrant color.

3. Fajitas Pizza

If you and your significant other can't decide whether to have Mexican food or pizza for dinner, combine the two in one dish. Start by spreading a zesty, fire-roasted tomato sauce over a pizza crust. Next, any type of grilled protein, such as chicken or beef strips, shrimp or tofu, that you'd like.

Then, layer on grilled fajita-style vegetables, including onions and red, yellow and orange bell peppers. If you want to give the pizza a spicy kick, layer on jalapeno slices as well. Sprinkle a generous helping of a shredded Mexican cheese blend over the top, and bake the pie until it's hot and bubbly.

Finish by topping the hot pizza with as much fresh cilantro as you'd like.
